Martha “Marty” Lentz passed away on September 25, 2019. She died peacefully in her home, as she wished, after a brief battle with a very aggressive cancer. There will be no funeral service, but her friends at UW will be holding a memorial service in the upcoming weeks. Information will be posted here once it becomes available.
Marty, Research Professor Emerita at the University of Washington School of Nursing, served on WIN’s Board of Governors as Governor Representative of Nursing Research from 2005 to 2008 and as WIN’s President from 2008 to 2010. Marty was inducted into the Western Academy of Nurses in 2006, received the Anna M. Shannon Mentorship Award in 2011, WIN’s Distinguished Research Lectureship Award in 2012, WIN’s Emeriti Award in 2016, and the Jo Eleanor Elliott Leadership Award in 2018. Marty served on numerous WIN committees throughout the years, including the Program Committee, the 50th Anniversary Committee, and the Research Committee.
The awards WIN bestowed upon Marty are a testament to her many contributions. She provided a voice of logic, vision, and wisdom in all deliberations. She was committed to advancing nursing science, the Western Institute of Nursing, and the members thereof. Marty generously shared her vast knowledge of nursing research, particularly questions related to methodology, with WIN members and students and in the deliberations of WIN committees. She encouraged WIN members to run for office and nurtured them in those roles. She had a keen sense of humor and her laugh will be greatly missed. Marty will be remembered fondly as the clever and humorous emcee of WIN’s annual RIFF-RAFF celebration and for her veracious advice on writing abstracts, “Read the instructions, believe the instructions, follow the instructions.” An incredible, generous, and inspiring leader, mentor, researcher, and friend—Marty will be missed profoundly by all who had the honor of knowing and working with her.
