Vicki Erickson Remembered

CU Nursing emerita faculty member, Dr. Vicki Erickson, died on September 11, 2018 after a valiant battle with ovarian cancer. She joined the University of Colorado (CU) College of Nursing (CON) in January 1987 after earning a PhD from the University of Texas, and retired in 2016. She was a pediatric nurse practitioner, and served as option coordinator for the CU Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Program (PNP) from 1990-2007. She was Director of the Masters and DNP programs from 2006-2014. Vicki dedicated her life to the care of children and to creating the PNP workforce of the next generation. U.S. News & World Report rankings for the PNP program rose to #1 and remained there for several years under her guidance.

Vicki mentored countless junior faculty at CU CON over her tenure there. She was a leader in faculty practice, creating clinics (literally) from small and unusual places with her construction and woodworking skills. She provided care to children in primary care clinics, youth corrections, and women’s shelters. She was part of the team at Sheridan Health Services School Based Health Center from its inception until her retirement. She was clearly passionate about her work, her students and her patients.

Vicki presented at the Annual Communicating Nursing Research Conference a number of times. She ably represented CU CON as a Campus Faculty Representative to the WIN/NEXus Program. She was knowledgeable and supportive of students and of the NEXus project. Paula McNeil, WIN Executive Director said: “Working with Vicki was always uplifting, even when debating tough issues. She is missed.”
