The University of Arizona (U of A) seeks a visionary and dynamic leader as the Chair of the Advanced Nursing Practice and Science (ANPS) in the College of Nursing, currently ranked #19 in NIH funding and #19 for DNP programs in the U.S. The next Chair of ANPS will collaborate closely with an enthusiastic Dean and dedicated team of faculty and staff to propel the College’s innovative research and educational initiatives to reach their goal of top 10 in national rankings. As part of the U of A Health Sciences with its 15 Centers of Excellence, opportunities abound for interdisciplinary collaboration and sharing in the challenges and rewards of research and scholarship with colleagues who are recognized around the world for their excellence in teaching and research.
Reporting to the Dean, the Chair plays a pivotal role in advancing the division’s mission and vision and will oversee the division’s budget, resources, and academic programs. Key aspects of this role include conducting a robust program of extramurally funded research, mentoring diverse faculty and staff to foster their professional growth, and ensuring a supportive and collaborative environment at the number one nursing school in Arizona.
This position is expected to be appointed at 1.0 with .50 FTE assigned to the administrative role of chair. The remaining FTE assignment will focus on research and service. Opportunities are available for teaching in the PhD program and mentoring pre-doctoral, post-doctoral and junior faculty.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
College / Division:
- Provide open, transparent, and regular communication with faculty, staff, students, and stakeholders about college and university strategic goals, vision and mission.
- Maintain shared governance in accordance with established College of Nursing policies.
- Oversee recruitment, retention, and management of personnel, including workload distributions, annual performance reviews, promotions, salary decisions, and disciplinary actions.
- Maintain a respectful, inclusive, and productive environment between the division, the college, and the University.
- Collaborate with faculty and staff to complete academic program evaluations, academic program revisions and accreditation within division, as appropriate.
- Mentor faculty to grow external funding for programs in collaboration with the Associate Dean for Research.
- Maintain an active, externally funded program of research.

- Collaborate with inter-institutional and inter-disciplinary offices and groups as needed.
- Create visibility within and beyond the unit for unit initiatives.
- Broker partnerships with community leaders and agencies for synergistic interface.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in Nursing or related field. If earned doctorate is not in Nursing, a graduate degree in Nursing is required.
- Distinguished record of achievement in research and service commensurate with an appointment at the rank of Full Professor or Associate Professor.
- Eligible for Arizona RN license.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Prior leadership experience in higher education.
- Experience with online, in-person, and hybrid programs.

About the College
The University of Arizona School of Nursing was established in 1957 under the leadership of Pearl Coulter. Initially housed in a conference room in the Liberal Arts Building, the School rapidly expanded with its first clinical setting in 1963, enrolling over 200 students and securing partnerships with 10 Tucson healthcare facilities. Research initiatives grew focusing on public health nursing within diverse cultural communities. With the eventual introduction of master’s and doctoral programs, along with specialized nurse practitioner training and the hosting of one of the first nursing research conferences in the U.S., the School gained international recognition. Today, the School's leadership and commitment to innovation have established it as a national leader in nursing education and research. In 2023, the University of Arizona College of Nursing secured the 13th position among public universities and the 19th position overall among nursing schools in National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding, as reported by the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research (BRIMR). The College of Nursing obtained approximately $5.02 million in funding during the fiscal year 2023, reflecting a remarkable growth of 34% over the previous year. Additionally, the University of Arizona College of Nursing’s DNP program secured the 10th position among public universities and the 19th position overall among nursing schools in US News & World Report rankings.
